Original William Walcot etching with drypoint, roulette work and aquatint.

Very fine signed proof impression from the only edition. Printed with carefully wiped plate tone to enhance the appearance of shafts of sunlight at the centre of the building.

The stupendous architecture of St. Peter’s in Rome lends itself naturally to William Walcot’s eye. Rather than dwelling on detail, William Walcot has chosen to show the broad sweep of the cathedral’s arched and vaulted ceilings and to concentrate upon the interplay of light within the building as a whole. The crowds of worshippers and sightseers, suggested in his highly stylised way, give the enormous structure scale.

On cream wove paper, watermarked J Whatman 1919, with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine condition.
