Guy Malet’s inspired original linocuts are remarkable for their use of simple, avant-garde design. Bold and innovative, this strikingly modernistic and highly stylised original linocut pre-dates Matisse’s Jazz images by some seventeen years.
The original linocuts of the highly talented printmaker Guy Malet are the most scarce of all Grosvenor School linocuts today. Although printed in editions of up to 50 impressions, the vast majority of Guy Malet’s linocuts were destroyed by water, in a domestic flood. As a consequence of this, Guy Malet’s linocuts – undoubtedly his finest printed works – are almost entirely unknown today. This particular impression is numbered ‘2’ from the intended edition of 30.
Guy Warre Malet was one of the most skilled printmakers to emerge from the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. A pupil and lifelong friend of Iain Macnab, Guy Malet is best known today for his highly accomplished wood engravings, primarily due to the extreme rarity of his linocuts.
On fine simile Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge. Traces of minor creasing and surface dirt towards edges of sheet, otherwise generally good condition.
