Original Eleanor Hughes etching.
Unique trial proof impression, prior to shading on some of the distant cottages and before an area of etched work was burnished away from the field in front of these cottages. Inscribed by the artist in pencil “Trial proof”.
In characteristic style, Hughes has chosen a viewpoint relegating the picturesque Cornish village to a subsidiary role in this image, incidental to the principal objects of her attention – namely the sculpturesque Elm trees which dominate the Cornish landscape. Eleanor Hughes was fascinated by the structure of trees – she loved to depict trees when bare of leaf, for only then could the fascinating patterns created by their limbs be seen clearly.
On cream laid paper, watermarked F J Head & Co, with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition. |
