Original Walter James etching.
Excellent signed proof impression with strong etched line. There is no record of the edition size of Walter James’s etchings; however, their scarcity today would infer that the editions were small.
This expansive view of the Italian hill country is a fine example of the spacious and atmospheric landscape etchings of the Hon. Walter J. James, Lord Northbourne. Trained under Frank Short, Walter James’s plates show a broad freedom of handling which is distinctly his own. The majority of his works depict landscapes in Northumberland or in Italy. An intimate observer of nature, Walter James was particularly fascinated by the structure and form of trees – always prominent in his etched works.
On cream wove paper, watermarked F J Head & Co, with full margins. Generally very good original condition. Image surface excellent. |
