St.George the Martyr, Southwark is a particularly fine example of the style of architectural plate for which Francis Dodd became best known. A beautifully balanced composition, this image depicts Borough High Street, the main street in the London borough of Southwark. The church of Saint George the Martyr is also known as “Little Dorrit’s church” as the main character in the novel Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens was baptised, married and often slept here in the story.

On firm simile Japan paper with margins. Foxed, but otherwise generally good original condition.
