One of only 20 signed proofs printed in the eighth state of the plate (39 in total). From the collection of Frank E. Bliss, author of the leading catalogue on the printed works of Alphonse Legros. Outstandingly strong impression with pronounced etched line.

It is this sort of densely crosshatched landscape work, which shows Alphonse Legros’s outstanding abilities as an etcher to the full. The artist has laid different densities of line, one upon the other, to achieve the varied effects of recession from the darkened foreground undergrowth to the distant farm upon the hill. This plate alone would have been sufficient lesson for any of his students at the Royal College or the Slade School.

Provenance: Collection of Frank E. Bliss, Esq. and with his collector’s stamp at the lower right corner of the sheet.

On heavy cream wove paper, with full margins. Generally very good original condition.
