Outstanding impression of E.S.Lumsden’s finest plate of London, from the only edition of 50 signed and numbered proofs, printed by the artist himself. An exceptionally striking proof of this impressive work, printed in warm toned brownish-black ink on pale ‘blue’ paper.

Aside from his one war print entitled Zeppelin over London of 1915, E.S.Lumsden made only one small group of seven etched views of London, all in the year 1921 – of these, Low Tide is unquestionably the finest. The image shows St Paul’s and the City of London from Southwark; a mooring post stands isolated in the foreground, abandoned by the waters at low tide. The power of this striking etched view has been greatly intensified by the artist’s careful application and wiping of plate tone prior to printing this particularly fine proof. Ernest Stephen Lumsden was an outstanding technician at both etching and printing his plates. He passed much of his knowledge of these techniques on to the rest of the world through his highly influential book The Art of Etching, first published in 1925.

On pale ‘blue’ toned laid paper, watermarked Stacey Wiseman 1885, with full margins and deckle edge. Very good original condition, image surface excellent.
