Executed in late 1921 and published in 1922, The Plough is one of the finest of R.S.Austin’s early etchings. Almost all of Robert Sargent Austin’s early printed work was executed in pure etching; however, it was not until about 1921 (the year in which this etching was completed) that he began to find the distinctive personal style for which he is now known.

Inspired by the attractive landscape of the Cotswolds, The Plough depicts a distant Gloucestershire village framed by two rooks and the plough itself in a manner which was to become characteristic of Robert Sargent Austin's designs of this period. Within this image are a number of minute scenes, grouped together to form a finely balanced composition and an enchanting rural view.

An impression of this etching was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1923.

On cream laid paper, watermarked JGL, with full margins. One or two isolated foxing spots, otherwise generally very good original condition.
