Original Robert Sargent Austin etching.
A particularly strong, dark impression of the completed state, from the only edition of 40 signed proofs, as issued for the artist by the Twenty-One Gallery. The plate is known to have been destroyed.
Almost all of Robert Sargent Austin’s early printed work was executed in pure etching. This is a particularly strong example of his unusual and emotional figure subjects. The sculptor James Woodford, R.A. (who was R.S.Austin’s brother-in-law) posed for this portrayal of a peasant possessed with deep religious convictions.
Robert Sargent Austin chose an impression of this print as his exhibition piece for the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1925.
On cream wove paper with full margins. Very good original condition. Image surface excellent. |
