Excellent impression with crisp, clear etched line. Artist’s proof, aside from the normal edition.

The high viewpoint which George Marples has selected for The Spider’s Web is a device which he used in a number of his most effective etchings. This imaginative composition shows the spider poised on her web, set within a frame of woodwork – handled in exquisite detail with the meticulous care of a scrupulous draughtsman. Beyond this, the artist has presented a splendid panoramic view of a country town lying quietly in the valley far below. In particular, this plate is remarkable for the impressive effect of receding distance which the artist has achieved through selective biting with the mordant. This effect has been further enhanced by the exceptional care which has been taken in printing this outstanding artist’s trial proof.

On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Faint evidence of a previous label in outer margin verso, otherwise very fine original condition.
