Original Eleanor Hughes etching.

Proof impression in the third and final state of the plate, prepared by the artist as a calendar for 1938 and inscribed by the artist in pencil on the reverse of the calendar support board “Calendar by Eleanor Hughes R.I.”. From the artist’s own personal collection.

In the first state of the plate, there is no tree to the left above the watermill and the centre tree lacks its lowest branch. In the second state these elements of the composition were added, as was further work between the righthand tree and the righthand edge of the plate. In this third and final state Hughes has burnished away the upper part of the etched work between the righthand tree and the righthand edge of the plate, leaving this area as clear sky.

Nancothan, Buryas Bridge, lies about one mile inland from Newlyn in Cornwall.

On cream wove paper with full margins and deckle edge. Prepared by the artist as a calendar; tied with ribbon to the inscribed support board and with a calendar for 1938 affixed to the wide lower margin of the etching sheet. Very good original condition.
