[The Harbour Wall] 1912 |
|
Original etching. Signed, dated and inscribed in pencil. S 200 x 301 mm; P & I 177 x 279 mm SOLD |
|
Very good signed proof impression with strong etched line; printed by the artist himself. Inscribed by Alexander Heaney with an illegible title in pencil (The Jetty ??).
A pencil note on the frame in which this etching was discovered suggests that this was Alexander Heaney’s first etching. Sheena Stoddard’s, City Impressions, Bristol Etchers 1910-1935, notes that Heaney's first recorded etchings, three Bristol views, were made in 1912; however, she does not provide the titles or subjects of these three works.
On simile Japan paper with narrow margins. Laid on board, with marginal defects. Image in good original condition.
Provenance: From the collection of Phyllis Heaney, the artist’s daughter – thence by descent to her granddaughter. |
