Excellent signed artist’s proof impression with rich drypoint burr.

Heaney’s carefully observed drypoint shows an elaborate funeral cortège passing a Bristol steet corner pub offering George’s beers. At that time Georges & Co. Ltd was the dominant brewery in the Bristol area, owning around 900 tied pubs by 1930. In the 1930’s, after Heaney’s death, Georges Breweries commissioned one of his contemporaries and fellow Bristol etchers, Edward W. Sharland to make a series of etchings of their new and rebuilt inns and pubs in the Bristol area. The exact location of this scene has not yet been determined, although the name ‘London House’ can be seen above the entrance to the pub.

On cream simile Japan paper with margins. Very good original condition.

Provenance: From the collection of Phyllis Heaney, the artist’s daughter – thence by descent to her granddaughter.
