Excellent impression – a comparatively strong printing for one of Stannard’s works which are normally quite dry in their printing. Rare.
This coastal scene shares the plein air naturalism which is the hallmark of all Norwich School etchings. Martin Hardie, when addressing the Print Collectors’ Club, remarked that he regarded Stannard as “a little master who has been too much hidden under the shadow of his Norwich contemporaries… Joseph Stannard, appears to deserve greater admiration, greater permanence than he has hitherto won”. Only twelve original etchings by Joseph Stannard are known, all of which are now scarce.
On cream wove paper with wide margins. Faint suggestion of foxing and slight mottled discolouration in left outer margin of sheet, otherwise very good original condition. |
