Original wood engraving by Clifford Cyril Webb.

Outstandingly fresh impression from the only edition of 50 signed and numbered proofs.

As an original wood engraver, Clifford Webb was one of the outstanding technicians of his day. He shunned abstraction, preferring a strong linear style in which the subject is easily identifiable. Webb worked on a large scale for a wood engraver and the decisive, clear lines of Abinger display every aspect of his eloquence as a creative master of his medium.

Abinger is a large, well-wooded and mostly rural civil parish that lies between Dorking, Shere and Ewhurst in Surrey. It adjoins Wotton Common on the same side of Leith Hill and includes the villages of Abinger Hammer, Sutton Abinger, and Abinger Common.

On fine simile Japan paper with full margins. Tipped at corners to the original Redfern Gallery mount in which it was first exhibited in 1935 (with full exhibition label verso). Some faint foxing at lower left corner of sheet, otherwise excellent original condition.
