Powerful, elegant and sybolic, The Vigil distills the finest qualities of Vernon Hill's etchings into an image of great beauty. The graceful guardian and his dog maintain their vigil beneath a solitary star, keeping watch over the sleeping women folk. The man's naked figure suggests a purity of purpose which is reinforced by his reverent pose, kneeling before his sword as though it were a form of crucifix. However, there is a deeper symbolism pervading this elegant work which remains both fascinating and mysterious in its beauty.
On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Generally very good original condition. |
