Original Arthur Briscoe etching.
Very good, strong impression, from the only edition of 75 signed and numbered proofs. The plate is known to have been destroyed.
Acknowledged as the finest marine etchings of the 20th century, Arthur Briscoe’s bold etched works display both the artist’s intimate knowledge of the sea and his innate mastery of the etching needle. In particular, Briscoe had the ability to convey the motion of the sea itself and the varied effects of light and shade with extraordinary economy of line. He aimed, whenever possible, to complete his etchings at first biting, relying entirely upon his superb draughtsmanship, rather than using repeated bitings with stopping out, to achieve the effects of recession and shading.
In the Tropics shows the square-rigger Lwöw making good passage on a fine day in the tropics. Some of the crew are seen at work laying new deck planking in the warmth of the full sun.
On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Excellent condition. |
