Original Augustus John etching.
Excellent impression with strong etched line, signed by Augustus John with his full signature, “Aug. E. John”. From the only published edition of 25 signed proofs, as issued in 1919. Titled and numbered with edition and plate numbers in ink by Knewstub, Augustus John’s publisher.
Augustus John is known to etched this plate some time prior to 1906 as Muirhead Bone printed one single proof from the plate on Japan paper in that year. The plate, which originally had wide blank margins, remained unused in the possession of the Chenil Gallery until October 1919 when the blank margins were cut off and it was printed in this edition of 25 numbered proofs for sale during their exhibition in November 1919.
On pale cream laid paper, with full margins and deckle edge. Stamped Made in England at edge of sheet verso. Mild time in outer margins, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent. |
