Original Edmund Blampied etching.

Rare early etching by Edmund Blampied. Excellent impression – the current leading catalogue by Appleby records that only a very few proofs of this were ever printed.

Carting Seaweed is one of the rare etchings shown at the first exhibition to feature any of Edmund Blampied’s etched works. The exhibition, held in the Spring of 1914, was organised to show the work of students at the London County Council Art School at Bolt Court, which Blampied attended, and where he is thought to have learnt the technique of etching. Carting Seaweed was shown as item no.57 in the exhibition.

Campbell Dodgson recorded only one trial proof of this etching before the plate was cut to size for printing the few proofs prepared for the Bolt Court exhibition. Dodgson recorded an edition of 93 proofs in his 1926 catalogue but the very limited number which have appeared in recent decades casts doubt on this figure and the current leading catalogue on the prints of Edmund Blampied by Appleby notes Carting Seaweed as “Edition: rare”.

Andrew Hall, who is at work on a forthcoming catalogue of Blampied’s works, has recorded proofs of Carting Seaweed in five collections, making this proof one of 6 examples located at present.

On cream laid paper paper with full margins and deckle edge. Excellent original condition.
