Original Edmund Blampied etching with drypoint.
Superb impression with exceptionally rich drypoint burr. An outstanding example numbered ‘2’ from the only edition of 100 signed and numbered proofs.
Chez Madame Dupont is one of the best know of all of Blampied’s famous Jersey tavern scenes. Here, his art is at its most individual and expressive. A master of the varying effects of light and shade, Blampied developed his own unique œuvre portraying the social side of everyday peasant life in Jersey. Chez Madame Dupont is a definitive example of this inspired and lively body of work.
Edmund Blampied’s subjects of this nature have no serious counterpart in British printmaking of the 20th century. They represent the combined traditions of the French and English backgrounds shared by the people of the Channel Islands. There is a wry humour to Blampied’s views of this earthy side of life which is conveyed with the skill and dexterity of a master of the drypoint medium. In Chez Madame Dupont, Blampied has captured the spirit of his characters to perfection, as the old regular with whom Madame Dupont is sharing a glass of wine and a cigarette takes a shine to his hostess.
On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Generally very good original condition. Image surface excellent. |
