Original Robin Tanner etching.

Very rare signed proof impression of this scarce etching by Robin Tanner. Printed on a large, untrimmed sheet of cream wove paper. Prior to the sole edition which Robin Tanner printed on firm folded paper which was used as Christmas cards by Robin and Heather Tanner.

Brilliant proof impression with exceptional clarity of line. Only one other proof aside from the present example has been located – this was described by Garton in his leading catalogue on Tannner’s etchings as “dedicated to A.P. Friend”. The exact size of the edition is unknown – in his catalogue entry for this etching Garton states “published in 1930 sent out to 200 friends by the artist” (the same edition size as he gives for the 1929 Christmas card) yet, elsewhere in the same catalogue, under the main entry for this etching, Garton notes “These two etchings were printed as Christmas cards by Robin and Heather Tanner in an edition of approximately sixty and sent to friends”. To add to the confusion, the etched Christmas card for 1929 is often found for sale nowadays whereas the etched card for 1930 is almost never seen – we can find only one other example offered for sale since 1988.

Robin Tanner has, rather appropriately, chosen the bird after which he was named and which is identified with Christmas in England as the subject of this beautifully rendered etching.

On cream wove paper with full margins and deckle edge. Expertly repaired crack in sheet at upper left platemark, otherwise very fine condition.
