Working proof impression, prior to the addition of drypoint and prior to the only edition of 75 signed and numbered proofs.
Exceptionally clear trial proof impression prior to the addition of drypoint shading on the four figures to the left and throughout the foreground of the plate. This trial proof has been printed under considerable pressure on ‘plate’ paper – printmakers would use exceptionally robust paper of this sort so that the inked plate could be printed under unusually high pressure in order to show every detail on the plate and the exact state of progress of the etching.
The scarcity of this particular work indicates the possibility that the artist may never have printed the full edition of the finished plate as no impression of the published composition above the number ‘5’ has been reported.
On stout cream wove ‘plate’ paper of the sort normally used for the most demanding trial proof printings, with full margins. Very good original condition. |
