Original Winifred Austen etching.

Excellent signed artist’s proof, prior to the published edition of 40 numbered impressions.

Winifred Austen established herself as one of the foremost etchers of wildlife in England during the first two decades of the twentieth century. Indeed, her finely handled and acutely observed etchings of animals and birds are the only works of the period to rival those of the Detmold twins.

The original plate for this etching still exists and unsigned modern re-strikes can be found, often with rather garish added colouring. The modern re-strikes do not compare in quality with the artist’s own signed original proofs of the sort offered here.

On cream wove paper with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition.
