Original Kenneth Steel etching and drypoint.

Outstanding impression, inscribed in pencil “Pattern Proof K.S.”. The master proof impression, printed prior to printing the published edition, selected by Kenneth Steel to be used as the guide proof when inking, wiping and printing impressions for the published edition (the published edition was issued in 1936).

Kenneth Steel is recorded to have made two plates depicting different views of Holy Island Castle at Lindisfarne, Northumberland - one is entitled Lindisfarne, Holy Island (1935); however, the artist entitled the present view, which was published the following year, Bebloe Castle, Holy Island since the name of the rocky outcrop upon which the castle is built is Beblowe Crag (my thanks to Edward Yardley for this information).

On cream wove Millbourn paper with full margins and deckle edge. Generally very fine original condition.

N.B. - Edward Yardley's comprehensive catalogue on the printed works of Kenneth Steel has now been published (December 2020).
