Knighton Farm is the most Romantic of Edward Bouverie-Hoyton’s English landscape etchings in the tradition of Samuel Palmer and the group of artists known as ‘The Ancients’.
Edward Bouverie-Hoyton was one of the talented group of etchers and engravers to emerge from Goldsmith’s College, along with Graham Sutherland, Paul Drury and William Larkins. He was much influenced by F.L.M. Griggs who he recalled “taught me more in one day than anyone else, about printing a plate really well” and he greatly admired the work of Samuel Palmer. One of his finest English Pastoral etchings, Knighton Farm reflects both the style and mood Palmer’s work and that of Bouverie-Hoyton’s contemporaries, Paul Drury and Graham Sutherland. Their etched works in this vein possess a spirit unique to English art.
On heavy cream wove plate paper of the sort used to print progress proofs; with full margins. Some slight lifting of the paper fibre when peeled from the ink of the plate, otherwise very fine original condition. |
