Unique presentation proof in an early form of the ‘second state’ of the plate, printed just after the lofty central mountain had been introduced, but before its right flank became shaded and before other details were altered. Very clear, crisp impression, inscribed in pencil by the artist “A Master’s House. IInd State. Joseph Webb. 1930. To Margot & Tony with my love. Oct. 1931. J.W.”.
Webb’s finest original etchings, like those of Griggs, depict imaginary buildings in architectural landscapes of ecclesiastical style formed from raw carved rock. A Master’s House shows a landscape of spartan penance and devotion, none of the pagan lyricism of Samuel Palmer is to be found in this image. In the foreground a monk-like figure points a pilgrim the way to the hallowed ground and sanctuary of A Master’s House, perched at the summit of a distant pinnacle, the path to which is a test of commitment in itself.
On cream laid Turner & Son paper with full margins and deckle edge. Generally good original condition. |
