Original John Copley lithograph.

Outstanding proof impression - presented personally by the artist to H. Wright, the foremost collector and cataloguer of Copley's lithographs.

A particularly fine example from the only edition of 25 signed proofs. Inscribed by Copley in pencil "To H. Wright con amore" and printed by the artist himself in his private studio. Copley regarded the inking and printing of the stone as a continuation of the creative process, believing that the artist alone can bring out the finest qualities in his drawing. This superb impression attests to his belief.

This image is one of the finest fruits of Copley's stay in Italy during the first weeks of 1913. The year proved to be one of his most productive, and the Italian lithographs of this period can be considered outstanding landmarks in his artistic progress. Based upon a drawing made from memory on the return to his hotel, Albano: The Water Carrier exemplifies the artist's fascination with human forms in motion. It shows a perfect balance between the poise necessary to support the weight of the girl's load and the natural rhythm of her movement. This beautiful composition must rank as one of the outstanding original lithographs of the period.

The stone is known to have been effaced.

On fine laid paper, watermarked F J Head & Co, with full margins and deckle-edge. Two short repaired tears in right hand outer margin of sheet, otherwise very fine condition. Image surface excellent.
