Rare early etching by Harry Morley.

Very good impression signed in pencil by Harry Morley.

The Leighton House Art Gallery catalogue of their 1977 exhibition devoted to the work of Harry Morley lists exhibit 2 as an etching entitled Roman Ruins which appears to be the etching entitled Ancient Ruins in the collection at Aberystwyth University. The present etching is clearly directly related to that subject.

Robert Meyrick, who is currently working on a comprehensive catalogue of Harry Morley’s prints, remarks regarding Morley’s early etchings on his website: “Morley needled the copper plates swiftly and with assurance. Rarely did these experimental designs progress through different states. As an extension of his drawing practice, the medium was used to express his thoughts and explore compositions. Etching was for him a personal pursuit. As such, the etchings were printed in small editions and rarely exhibited.”

I would like to thank Robert Meyrick for identifying the title and date of this etching.

On cream wove paper with full margins. Mild mat line in outer margins, otherwise very fine original condition.
