Scarce signed proof wood engraving by Vera Waddington. Very good impression numbered ‘2’ from the only edition of 25 signed and numbered proofs.
Vera Waddington trained as an artist at the famous Slade School of Fine Art under Wilson Steer and the formidable Henry Tonks. Her first solo show, held at the Carfax Gallery, London, in December 1910 featured drawings and watercolours made during a remarkable journey to China on the Trans Siberian Railway in 1909-10. Vera Waddington was already well established as a professional artist by the time she learnt the art of wood engraving from the renowned Eric Fitch Daglish in the late 1920’s. Her first exhibited works in this medium were shown in 1929 at the Claridge Galllery and at the Art Institute of Chicago. Vera Waddington held a further solo show at the Goupil Gallery in 1939 and continued to make wood engravings and linocuts, as well as painting in oils, until her death following a road accident in 1954.
Vera Waddington’s beautifully crafted wood engravings are regarded amongst the finest of the period; however, signed proofs are now scarce as she only printed a small edition of each work, rarely exceeding 25 numbered impressions.
