Mezzotint after J.M.W. Turner. Beautiful signed proof impression, with full tonal range and velvety burr to the mezzotint surface. From the only published edition of 50 signed proofs on India paper.
Considered by many to be Frank Short’s most beautiful mezzotint after the work of another artist, Mount Rigi at Dawn is a masterly translation of Turner’s watercolour drawing (known as The Blue Rigi: Lake of Lucerne - Sunrise) to the monochrome mezzotint medium. This work was issued as a large independent plate, and not as part of a series.
Turner’s watercolour of this subject last appeared at auction in 1942, when it was bought by Agnew’s and sold to the family of the present owner.
On pale cream India paper applied to original warm white wove backing sheet, as issued. With margins. One faint and unobtrusive crease, otherwise very fine original condition. |
