Original Sylvia Gosse etching.
Very fine impression from the only edition of 15 signed proofs. A particularly fine proof printed under considerable pressure and with pronounced resulting platemark.
The delicate and skilful etchings of Sylvia Gosse display a remarkable similarity of style with those of her master and colleague Walter Sickert. Indeed, Sylvia Gosse absorbed Sickert's etching technique to the full; however, the sensitive etched studies which she made of her friends and neighbours going about their daily lives have an air of gentle intuition which is quite distinct from Sickert’s works. Sylvia Gosse captures the atmosphere of contemporary life within the close community surrounding her home in Charlotte Street, London with a quiet, reflective mood typified by this etching of The Long Plait. Although this particular work bears close stylistic similarities to Sickert’s A Weak Defence (c.1911) and Red Cross (1915), both the final image and its mood show the distinct individuality of Sylvia Gosse’s own etched works.
On cream laid Van Gelder Zonen paper with full margins and deckle edge. Excellent original condition. |
