Charles Tunnicliffe regarded the small group of allegorical and mythological etchings which he made around 1930-31, to be the most important of his etched works. By this time he was already well established as an etcher of farm animals and farming scenes; however, with these allegorical works, he sought to achieve a lasting place amongst the great artists of traditional etching. The Fruit of the Tree, with its obvious parallels to Albrecht Dürer’s famous engraving of Adam and Eve attracted particular applause from the critics. It was chosen for illustration in Fine Prints of the Year 1931 and was singled out for particular praise by Malcolm Salaman in the introductory essay to the volume. Along with The Flight from Eden, The Fruit of the Tree must be considered one of C.F.Tunnicliffe’s most audacious etched works.
