Original Thomas Barker pen lithograph.
Exceptionally fine impression with bright contrast. On original backing sheet, in particularly good condition.
One of only 50 impressions ever printed. This rare early pen lithograph was published privately at Bath in 1814 in Thomas Barker’s only series of lithographic landscapes under the title of Thirty-two lithographic impressions from pen drawings of landscape scenery. These freely handled lithographic drawings reflect Thomas Barker’s continuing interest in the peasant and rural life of his day – indeed, this particular subject is sometimes viewed as a contemporary interpretation of The Flight into Egypt. It is particularly unusual to find an example of this scarce original print with full margins and in such fine original condition.
On off-white wove paper laid on original cream wove backing sheet, watermarked 1807, as issued. |
