Excellent impression printed in brownish black ink with delicate plate tone. From the only edition of 100 signed proofs.
Many regard Marius Bauer’s etchings from this period, after his return from his first journey to India, as the highpoint of his work in etching. Made on copper, unlike the zinc plates used for his Turkish trip, these images display a complex delicacy of line whilst retaining the wonderful spontaneous nature of his earlier works. By this time Marius Bauer had adopted a specific approach of not working directly from nature, but rather from how he remembered nature. His advise to one prospective artist was “cease working from nature; look at your subject attentively and draw it the next day; this is the only way to produce individual work”. This rather unusual approach explains why Marius Bauer’s works possess such a thoroughly pervasive atmosphere of the true orient when compared with the direct sketches of other artists whose work can so often appear little more than mere reportage.
It was soon after Marius Bauer’s first return from India that his true merits as an etcher became recognised – he was awarded the Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 for his etchings, an honour which he shared with J.A.McN. Whistler and Anders Zorn. Shortly after this (in 1902) the editions making up 100 impressions of most of his earlier plates were published, selling out almost at once.
