Original Marius Bauer etching.
Beautiful impression printed in warm brownish-black ink, with carefully wiped plate tone. From the only edition of 100 signed proofs.
As Marius Bauer continued to develop the imagery which he had recorded on his various trips to the orient and the Balkans into furthers etchings, his images became ever more detailed and visionary. In the late 1890's he became especially intrigued by Roumanian folklore after being lent a French language copy of the Roumanian folkstory La Jeunesse Inaltérable et la Vie Eternelle - a book which he went on to illustrate with 48 etchings. During this period he elaborated his rapid sketches from memory into ever more exotic scenes of opulent palaces and romantic mystery such as this etching of The Magic Door.
On cream laid paper, with full margins and deckle edge. Slight traces of previous mounting at extreme outer corners of sheet, otherwise very good original condition. |
