Many regard Marius Bauer’s etchings from this period, after his return from his first journey to India, as the highpoint of his work in etching. Made on copper, unlike the zinc plates used for his Turkish trip, these images display a complex delicacy of line whilst retaining the wonderful spontaneous nature of his earlier works. By this time Marius Bauer had adopted a specific approach of not working directly from nature, but rather from how he remembered nature. His advise to one prospective artist was “cease working from nature; look at your subject attentively and draw it the next day; this is the only way to produce individual work”. This rather unusual approach explains why Marius Bauer’s works possess such a thoroughly pervasive atmosphere of the true orient when compared with the direct sketches of other artists whose work can so often appear little more than mere reportage.

It was this style of distinctive work which was to inspire artists such as E.S. Lumsden and other British etchers to travel to India and beyond.

On cream laid paper, with full margins and deckle edge. Generally very fine original condition.
