Edmund Blampied’s mature works depicting characters from everyday life, such as Leisure, show his vigourous drypoint technique at its best. There is a personality and sense of witty observation to these works which reflects the artist’s extensive experience with comic satirical illustration. In view of the essentially French background of Edmund Blampied’s upbringing in Jersey, it is likely that his art was influenced by a knowledge of the work of the French artists such as Honoré Daumier and Jean-Louis Forain.

Here, Edmund Blampied’s art is at its most individual, for he developed his own unique œuvre portraying the social side of everyday life in Jersey. Leisure is typical of this inspired and lively body of work. There is a light-hearted humour to Edmund Blampied’s views of this earthy side of life which is conveyed with the skill and dexterity of a master of the drypoint medium.
