Original John Buckland Wright etching.
Excellent proof impression, from the only edition of 30 stamped and numbered proofs.
One of the last independent engravings which John Buckland Wright completed prior to his untimely death in 1954, Six Bathers is based upon a photograph taken of six Portuguese fishergirls whilst they changed amongst the sand dunes.
Once again, the artist’s particular obsession with the imagery of women dressing and bathing is the subject of his attention. However, when contrasted with his earlier wood engravings of this nature, the effect of the intervening years can be seen to have had a dramatic effect upon the artist’s style. Gone is the relaxed, decadent imagery of the 1920’s and early 1930’s – instead, in its place, is a much more modernistic approach which the artist was developing in this final year of his life. Sadly, following a routine operation for a kidney complaint, a post operative infection brought on the complications from which John Buckland Wright died unexpectedly, aged 56, only months after he had completed this work.
On cream wove paper with full margins and deckle edge. Excellent original condition. |
