Extremely strong signed proof impression. One of 85 Japanese vellum proofs, aside from the main edition.
Cameron’s largest printed work, etched for the Art Union of Scotland as their presentation plate for the year 1896. The image commemorates the Forty-Five uprising by the Scottish Jacobites in support of Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles II, claimant of the Stuart line to the British throne). As the heraldic crest at the centre recalls, the rebellion was crushed the following year at the Battle of Culloden, after which Charles fled to exile in France.
On cream Japanese vellum, with full margins and deckle edge. Two very small and unobtrusive marks at base of image, otherwise generally very good original condition. |
