Original Edward Gordon Craig wood engraving.
Particularly fine presentation proof impression with exceptional clarity of line. Inscribed by the artist in pencil “State 7 Copy 3. 20 copies. EGC. 1927-1938. 222” and dedicated by the artist “To the Marichal & Daphne Hammond 1950 with excuses. 23.May-”. Mounted on the artist’s original wove paper backing sheet, inscribed in pencil by Craig “A place in Italy – Genoa – behind my old villa – drawn – cut on wood & printed by me – think! think of the labour. EGC”.
This complex wood engraving is one of Edward Gordon Craig’s most elaborate landscape scenes. The image shows the lane at the back of E.G.Craig’s house at Sturla, near Genoa, in Italy. In its earliest states, begun in 1927, this wood engraving had featured the figure of Stendahl, supposedly on his way to Genoa to visit Lord Byron. However, Craig continued to work on the block for many years and removed the figure to leave a tall lightly worked area in the vertical bank at the left of the image. This fine proof impression shows the block in its seventh state (of ten).
On fine Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge. One faint soft crease, otherwise very fine original condition. |
