Marjorie Firth’s white-line technique of wood engraving is displayed with particular clarity in this image. This approach to printmaking requires the artist to describe their subject in terms of the light catching planes, instead of the shadows. Thus, the artist-engraver works from dark to light rather than vice versa – precisely the opposite approach to normal etching or engraving on metal.
