Original Muirhead Bone drypoint.
Outstanding signed proof impression with exceptional variety of tone and with rich drypoint burr. From the only edition of 91 signed proofs in the completed state of the plate (103 in all).
An exceptional example of the freshly completed composition with the drypoint burr printing strong and rich. The bright highlights and deep shadow create striking contrast which has been balanced by the delicate application of plate tone to areas such as the upper parts of the sky.
Based upon a drawing of June 1923, Railway Sheds, Marseilles, is one of the most arresting of Muirhead Bone’s beautifully balanced architectural compositions. It remains amongst the most sought-after of the artist’s later drypoint plates.
Provenance: Collection of Dr.S.W. Pelletier and with his collector’s stamp verso.
On thick fibrous simile Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine condition. |
