Acknowledged as one of the greatest drypoints of its era, Rainy Night in Rome depicts the church of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni which stands at a corner on the Via di Ripetta in Rome (Wright incorrectly named the church as the nearby San Rocco). The imposing edifice of the church towers above the horse-drawn cab seen waiting beneath a street lamp. The cab driver holds an umbrella aloft for shelter. The priest is seen leaving the church at the lower right of the image, whilst his congregation disperses into the darkness and the falling rain. Illuminated in the distance is a façade of houses on the opposite bank of the river Tiber. A powerful and atmostpheric image, this drypoint stands out as one of the great masterworks of the British Etching Revival.

On fibrous simile Japan paper with full margins. Very fine condition, image surface excellent.
