[Peacock and Exotic Flowers] by George Marples

[Peacock and Exotic Flowers]   c.1923

Original etching with aquatint, partially coloured by hand.
Signed in pencil.
S 248 x 294 mm; P & I 188 x 227 mm
Unique proof impression with each of the exotic flowers hand-painted by the artist.

This unusual work by George Marples is reminiscent of the elaborate etchings of the Detmold twins – highly stylised in an oriental manner, this ornate image was clearly intended as a decorative scheme, rather than as a literal depiction of the peacock.

On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge, applied to original warm white wove backing sheet. From the platemark impression it is clear that this unique proof was printed with the two sheets applied together, as they are now. Backing sheet foxed at extreme edges. The print itself is in generally very good original condition. Image surface excellent.
