Very fine signed proof impression printed with delicate plate tone. From the only edition of 45 signed proofs, printed by the artist himself.

In November 1913 Ernest Stephen Lumsden married Mabel Royds and from then on the couple travelled together on the extensive trips which were to provide the material for both artists’ original prints. This etching was drawn directly onto the plate from life in the spring of 1914, during the couples’ stay in India on their extended honeymoon. Classed by Salaman amongst the loosely grouped ‘Second Indian Set’, Awnings and Umbrellas (Benares) shows a view on the shores of the river which was to capture E.S.Lumsden’s heart, the sacred Ganges.

On simile Japan paper laid on ‘silver tissue’, apparently as issued, with full margins and deckle edge. Very faint rub to right of image, otherwise generally very good original condition.
