Excellent signed proof impression with good colours. Printed in shades of grey, blue, red and black inks. From the only edition. The blocks for this woodcut are known to have been destroyed immediately after this edition had been printed.
Between the years 1908 and the late 1930’s Urushibara lived in England and France, and travelled much throughout western Europe. Like all printmakers of the period he was drawn to the beauty of Venice and here he produced some of his very finest original colour woodcut works. This beautifully atmospheric print distils the magic of this romantic Italian city with its waterways, gondolas and magnificent palaces. Urushibara has chosen the quiet stillness of a misty morning for this image, employing subtle colours to convey the atmospheric effects which he required. It is a masterly example of multiple colour woodblock printmaking.
Urushibara later repeated a section of this composition, depicting the same scene in winter, with falling snow.
