This image of the ancient Egyptian temple of Kom Ombo displays William Walcot’s impressive pictorial vision at its height, with the solemn architecture of ancient Egypt filling the view and given tangible scale by the figures at its feet. William Walcot’s imaginative plates of this sort were the most sought-after of all of his designs during his lifetime. These flights of fantasy into the world of ancient Egypt and its pharaohs are without comparison during the whole of the British Etching Revival. They are masterly works showing visions of architectural splendour brought to life through the artist’s imaginative draughtsmanship and inspired use of printmaking techniques.
The remains of the temple of Kom Ombo are located on the River Nile about 50 km north of Aswan. The temple was dedicated to both the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus the elder.
On cream wove paper, with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition. |
