Beautiful impression with subtle tonal variation. A very fine impression in the completed state of the plate, as issued by Carfax & Co. for the only published edition.
This famous image shows the Doge’s Palace in Venice with the column of the Lion of St. Mark standing before it. Gondolas are seen moored to posts along the quayside in the foreground. This etching relates directly to an oil painting of 1895-6, now in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
This impression was purchased from Thos.Agnew & Sons Ltd. in 1960, exhibition catalogue Centenary exhibition of Etchings and Drawings by W.R. Sickert, no.115 (stock ref.20584). It is inscribed in pencil “Lady Holford”.
On cream laid F J Head paper with full margins and deckle edge. Faintest suggestion of mat line in margins, otherwise very fine condition. |
