Original Winifred Austen aquatint.

Winifred Austen’s colour aquatints, such as Zebra Finches, are remarkable achievements in colour printing. They are amongst the finest colour aquatints of their kind produced in this country, showing both an outstanding mastery of technique and an extraordinary ability to capture the character of the birds which she has portrayed.

Winifred Austen only began to experiment with colour printing in about 1938, after some 30 years as a printmaker. Working from her home near Woodbridge in Suffolk, she was one of the few original etchers to continue making prints after the collapse of the commercial print market in the late 1920’s, producing marvellous bird and animal studies throughout her life.

Very fine original condition.
