Original James Clarke Hook etching.
Excellent impression with strong etched line, from the only published edition, as issued by the Etching Club in 1872.
This strong etching shows a view of the Dutch town of Dort, where the painter Aelbert Cuyp was born in 1620. Cuyp is best known for his poetic landscapes with animals, bathed in glowing light. His art exerted an enormous influence on the development of English painting, since nearly all of his best works were to be found in this country and the majority are still in Britain today.
On fine India paper, applied to original warm white wove backing sheet, with full margins, as issued. Very slight discolouration at extreme outer edge of backing sheet, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent. |
